Change the order of your WordPress pages

WordPress allows you to reorder your pages so they can appear in a different order in your navigation area.

Ordering your pages

Every page on your site has a page order number associated with it. The lower this number is, the earlier it appears in your navigation. So, page 1 comes before page 2, 2 before 3 and so on. By changing these page numbers you can change the order of the pages in the navigation on your site.

This also works with sub-pages. The lower the order number of a sub-page, the earlier it appears in the navigation list.

Before you begin reordering your pages, it is helpful for you to know what order numbers are currently assigned to each page as changing one page will often mean changing the order number on multiple pages to get the exact order you want. One strategy you might want to consider is numbering your pages by 10’s instead of by 1 (10, 20, 30 instead of 1, 2, 3) to allow you to insert pages between pages without having to reorganize all your pages.

You can reorder your pages as many times as you wish at any time.

Step by step instructions

You can change the order number of a page in 2 places: in the Attributes widget on Edit page (screenshot), or using Quick Edit in the Edit Pages List (screenshot). For these instructions, we will use the Quick Edit option as this is a quicker way to reorder the pages in your site.

To change the order of your pages do the following:

  • Click on Pages > Edit. This will bring up a list of all the pages on your site.
  • Hover your mouse over the page you want to change the order of. A list of options will appear just below the title of the page.
  • Click Quick Edit. The Quick Edit screen will appear (screenshot).
  • In the Order field, change the order number.
  • Click Update Page.

Remember that you may have to repeat this process on a few pages in your site to get the order correct.

If the order of the pages in the Pages widget is wrong

Depending on what Sort By option is set to in the Pages widget, you may notice that the Pages widget is not displaying the pages in the correct order. To fix this, do the following;

  • Click Appearance > Widgets
  • In the sidebar, expand the Pages widget by clicking on the arrow to the right of the word Pages in the widget. This will open up the widget (screenshot).
  • In the Sort by: dropdown menu, choose sort by Page Order.
  • Click the Save button

The page order in the widget should now match the page order in your top navigation bar.
