Organizing your WordPress site with subpages

Once you start adding a few pages to your site, you may want to organize them to make the navigation on your site easier and less cluttered. One way to do this is to use parent pages and sub-pages.

Using sub-pages

If you are using the default Camosun theme, only parent pages will appear along the top navigation bar of your site. Sub-pages will appear nested below their parent page in the navigation area on the right. If you are using a different theme, this may vary so test it out to see how the theme handles parent and sub-page nesting.

You can nest sub-pages within sub-pages, but remember that different themes will handle nested sub-pages differently so be sure to check this on your site.

You can make a page a sub-page of a parent page at any time.

Step by step instructions

To make an existing page a sub-page, go to your Dashboard and do the following:

  • Click on Pages > Edit. This will bring up a list of all the pages on your site.
  • Click on the title of the page that you wish to make a sub-page.
  • On the Edit page screen, find the Attributes widget on the right just below the Publish widget.
  • Under Parent, click the dropdown menu and choose a parent page.
  • Click Update in the Publish widget.

To make a page a sub-page when you create it:

  • Click on Pages > Add New
  • Add a title and your content to the new page.
  • On the Add New Page screen, find the Attributes widget on the right just below the Publish widget.
  • Under Parent, click the dropdown menu and choose a parent page.
  • Click Publish in the Publish widget.

Your page is now a sub-page and will appear nested below its parent in the navigation.
